Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has introduced WhatsApp Channels, a new feature that offers a simple, reliable, and private way to receive important updates from individuals and organizations within the WhatsApp messaging platform.
Expanding to More Countries, Including India

WhatsApp has announced its plans to bring Channels to additional countries, with a particular focus on India. In the coming months, WhatsApp Channels will be launched in collaboration with global voices and select organizations in Colombia and Singapore, where it will initially become available before expanding to other countries.
A Broadcasting Tool for Admins
With WhatsApp Channels, administrators gain access to a one-way broadcast tool, enabling them to send various forms of content, including texts, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. This functionality is similar to the concept of Telegram channels, which allow users to broadcast information or content to all their followers.
Building Privacy-First Messaging

WhatsApp Channels will be located in a dedicated tab called “Updates,” separate from users’ personal chats with friends, family, and communities. By doing so, the Meta-owned messaging platform aims to create the most private broadcast messaging product available, incorporating the robust privacy protections that WhatsApp is known for.
Maintaining Privacy and Security
As highlighted by Mark Zuckerberg, WhatsApp’s core principles include not storing users’ messages. This commitment to privacy is reflected in WhatsApp Channels, where channel updates will be available for 30 days without any permanent record. Channel administrators’ phone numbers will not be revealed to followers, and following a channel will not disclose this information to the admin or other channel followers.
Future Outlook and Release Plans
Mark Zuckerberg expressed his excitement for the launch of WhatsApp Channels, stating that it is only the beginning. While initially rolling out in Singapore and Colombia, Channels will be made available to everyone later this year. The goal is to establish Channels as the most private communication method, revolutionizing the way people follow and connect with the people and organizations that matter to them.
