At the start of the new year, a brand-new Marvel Cinematic Universe film will hit theatres. Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins with Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The film that introduced us to the series’ main antagonist, Kang the Conqueror, and was thus one of the most anticipated in the series, was hailed as a true Magnum Opus. The film opened to lukewarm reviews this week and appears to be nearing its all-time low at this point.
Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is the third installment in the Ant-Man trilogy and the first in Phase 5. The film was said to be an entry into the Multiverse, which had been teased and introduced in the final few films of the highly experimental Phase 4. Peyton Reed directed the film, which featured a number of returning cast members as well as newcomers such as Jonathan Majors’ Kang.
While the scope of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania has expanded and a number of intriguing references have been teased, early box office returns indicate that audiences aren’t particularly invested. In case you missed it, the 2021 Chloe Zhao-directed film Eternals has a 47% audience score and a B rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest-rated film in the MCU roaster on Rotten Tomatoes. However, just two days after its global release, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania has joined the ranks of the critically panned film, with a 47% rating.
Even though Ant-Man 3 has received mixed reviews, it is expected to match or surpass Eternals in the coming days. In the end, only time will tell.
