MEA India Calls for De-escalation Amid Ongoing Tensions with Pakistan
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), under the leadership of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, has called for de-escalation amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan following “Operation Sindoor.”
In a special briefing on May 10, 2025, Misri emphasized that India remains committed to maintaining regional stability and security while asserting its right to defend its sovereignty.
Operation Sindoor: India’s Response to Terrorism
“Operation Sindoor” was launched on April 23, 2025, following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
India’s military action targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), with precision airstrikes aimed at neutralizing identified militant infrastructure.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the operation as “controlled, precise, measured, and non-escalatory.” He emphasized that the strikes were conducted to eliminate terror threats and did not target civilian areas.
Pakistan’s Response and Escalation
Following India’s strikes, Pakistan launched retaliatory actions, including drone and missile attacks targeting Indian military installations and civilian areas.
MEA India condemned these actions, stating that Pakistan’s use of armed drones and surface-to-surface missiles represented a severe escalation.
Misri warned that while India prefers peace, any further aggression would be met with appropriate and proportionate responses.
International Mediation Efforts
Amid rising tensions, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in diplomatic talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, urging both nations to exercise restraint.
The United States emphasized the importance of direct communication between India and Pakistan to prevent miscalculations.
The G7 nations also issued a joint statement calling for immediate de-escalation and direct dialogue between the two countries.
MEA’s Emphasis on Diplomatic Resolution
In his address, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that India is open to diplomatic discussions with Pakistan, provided Islamabad ceases support for cross-border terrorism.
“India remains committed to peace, but peace must be based on mutual respect and a rejection of violence,” Misri stated.
He further emphasized that India will continue to engage with international partners to ensure that terrorism does not threaten regional stability.
What Lies Ahead
As tensions persist, the international community is closely monitoring the situation. India’s MEA has reiterated that while the nation seeks peace, it will not compromise on its security.
India is expected to maintain diplomatic pressure on Pakistan while continuing to work with allies to ensure a peaceful resolution.
