Meerut CCSU Tensions Rise After Police Officer Allegedly Body-Shames BTech Student, Sparks Campus Clash

Meerut, April 8, 2025:
Tensions ran high at Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU), Meerut on Sunday evening after an alleged incident of body-shaming by a police officer escalated into a violent confrontation between students and police. The clash, which unfolded outside the campus temple during Navaratri celebrations, has triggered outrage among students and the university administration.

According to student accounts, Sub-Inspector Satish Chaudhary asked a group of students not to loiter outside the temple and allegedly called fourth-year BTech student Harsh Veer Chaudhary “mota” (fat)—a comment that sparked a heated argument.

“We were walking away when he made the remark. I confronted him, and he threatened to teach me a lesson,” said Harsh, who later filed complaints with the university authorities and the Chief Minister’s helpline.

Clash Caught on Camera, Police Deny Excess

Shortly after the verbal spat, the officer reportedly called for reinforcements. A video clip, circulated on social media (yet unverified), shows police wielding batons and using abusive language to disperse the students. Harsh was briefly detained but released later in the evening following university intervention.

“They weren’t arrested, just counselled and let go,” said Medical police station SHO Sheelesh Yadav, adding that the students became argumentative when asked to disperse.

University Condemns Police Conduct

The incident drew a strong response from the CCSU administration, with Chief Proctor Professor Beer Pal stating:

“Police shouldn’t behave like this inside the university campus. We’ve asked them to identify the real miscreants, but no innocent student should be harassed.”

The university is reportedly conducting an internal inquiry while seeking formal clarification from local law enforcement.

Female Students Raise Alarm Over Campus Safety

Amid the unrest, several female students voiced growing concerns about campus safety, alleging that harassment by male students—both from within and outside the university—is frequent near the temple and hostel areas.

“These students often stare at us or pass inappropriate comments. We feel unsafe even stepping out of the hostel,” said a BBA student, requesting anonymity.

The location of girls’ hostels near the temple reportedly results in more frequent police patrols, which sometimes escalate into confrontations, students say.

Background: Campus on Edge During Navaratri

Sunday’s incident took place on the final day of Navaratri, when student gatherings near the campus temple are common. According to witnesses, the atmosphere had been festive until the altercation began.

Sources confirmed that students from different courses, including engineering and commerce, were gathered peacefully when the officer’s comment allegedly provoked the situation.

What’s Next: Investigations and Dialogue

  • Harsh Veer Chaudhary has lodged complaints with CCSU authorities and the CM’s helpline
  • University administration is in talks with Meerut police to review security protocols
  • Internal reviews and possible student-police mediation sessions are expected in the coming days

No FIR has been filed yet, and the Medical police station maintains that the situation was under control after the initial escalation.

A Call for Better Campus Policing

The Meerut CCSU student-police clash has spotlighted not only issues of police conduct but also deep-rooted safety and sensitivity concerns within university campuses. Students and faculty alike are now calling for stricter policing guidelines and the establishment of a dedicated grievance redressal cell to ensure such incidents are addressed with transparency and fairness.
