In a critical decision, NASA and SpaceX have moved up the Crew-10 launch, allowing astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore to return from the International Space Station (ISS) earlier than expected. Originally scheduled to return in late March or early April, Williams and Wilmore will now depart in mid-March 2025 aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule, Endeavor.
The astronauts’ extended stay on the ISS was due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which included a helium leak. NASA’s decision to use Endurance, a previously flown Crew Dragon capsule, for the upcoming Crew-10 mission has accelerated the timeline.
Key Highlights:
The Mission Timeline:

The Crew-10 launch, initially delayed to March 25 due to production issues with a new Crew Dragon capsule, will now occur on March 12, 2025. This adjustment allows NASA to maintain ISS operations and ensure the safe return of its crew.
Upon the Crew-10 team’s arrival, there will be a brief handover period before Williams, Wilmore, Nick Hague, and Aleksandr Gorbunov return to Earth.
Crew-10 Team Members:
The four-person Crew-10 team will be composed of the following astronauts:
- Anne McClain (NASA)
- Nichole Ayers (NASA)
- Takuya Onishi (JAXA)
- Kirill Peskov (Roscosmos)
These astronauts will continue critical research and maintenance aboard the ISS while ensuring that operations run smoothly.
Preparing for the Crew-10 Launch:

The Endurance Crew Dragon capsule is undergoing final refurbishment to guarantee it is fully prepared for its role in the Crew-10 mission. Refurbishment efforts include work on the trunk stack, propellant load, and transportation to SpaceX’s hangar at Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The capsule will then be integrated with the Falcon 9 rocket for launch.
This decision ensures that the ISS remains fully manned following the handover while also reducing the extended stay for Williams and Wilmore.
The Extended Stay and ISS Operations:

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore arrived at the ISS in June 2024 aboard Boeing’s Starliner. Despite the delays, Williams played a vital role in overseeing ISS operations during the extended mission. She ensured that crucial programs continued as planned, demonstrating exceptional leadership and adaptability.
NASA and SpaceX’s decision to expedite the Crew-10 mission is a well-coordinated effort to address delays and ensure crew safety. With Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore set to return in March, the upcoming Crew-10 launch will mark another milestone in NASA and SpaceX’s partnership.
Stay tuned for updates as NASA and SpaceX prepare for the next chapter of human space exploration!
