In a significant development for the Haryana Congress, Nirmal Singh, a four-time former MLA and ex-minister, returned to the party after a hiatus of over four years. The move is seen as a positive reinforcement for former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Nirmal, accompanied by his daughter Chitra Sarwara, officially joined the Congress in a ceremony attended by Hooda, state party president Udai Bhan, and party affairs in-charge Deepak Babaria in New Delhi.
Leaving Congress in 2019
The father-daughter duo had left the Congress in 2019 when Chitra was denied a party ticket for the Assembly polls. Discontented, they contested as Independent candidates, with Nirmal running from Ambala City and Chitra from Ambala Cantt. Although Nirmal secured nearly 56,000 votes, both faced defeat. Later, they formed the Haryana Democratic Front and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2022 after the party’s success in Punjab.
Return to Congress Fold
With a change in the state Congress leadership, Nirmal and Chitra decided to rejoin the Congress, resigning from AAP a week prior. Nirmal expressed his intention to contest the 2024 Assembly election from Ambala City, while Chitra plans to run again from Ambala Cantt. Nirmal is also considered a potential candidate for the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha seat, having contested in 2019 as a Congress candidate.
Political Background of Nirmal Singh
Nirmal Singh, hailing from Mohra village in Ambala, is known for his political journey that began during his college days. Initially drawn to the JP movement, he joined the youth Congress in 1976, eventually becoming its state president for seven years. He won the Assembly seat in 1982 and 1991, serving as a minister in the Bhajan Lal government. Despite facing setbacks, including arrest in connection with a murder case, Nirmal has remained active in Haryana politics.
Nirmal’s View on Hooda and Congress
Nirmal Singh considers Bhupinder Singh Hooda the “best CM” of Haryana, praising his commitment to his words. In the internal dynamics of Congress, Nirmal’s return is seen as a positive development for Hooda. Nirmal advocates for more development focus on northern Haryana, which he believes has been neglected despite playing a crucial role in forming state governments.
