Omar Abdullah: Emotional Stand After Pahalgam Attack – No Statehood Demand as 26 Mourned
In a deeply emotional address to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah declared that the government will not push for statehood demands at this time, following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. His remarks struck a chord across the state and political lines, as he emphasized compassion and unity in the face of tragedy.
“Not the Time for Statehood”
Speaking during a special session on April 28, Abdullah stated:
“I will not use this moment to demand statehood. After Pahalgam, with what face can I ask for statehood for Jammu and Kashmir? It would be shameful if we go to the central government and say 26 people have died—now give me statehood.”
He reiterated that the demand for statehood remains valid and will be raised again in the future, but not on the back of national grief.
A Heartfelt Address to the Assembly
The Chief Minister also expressed his helplessness in offering comfort to the families of the victims:
“I didn’t have the words to apologise. What should I say to children who lost their father, or to a wife who lost her husband just days after their wedding?”
He questioned how such an attack could happen during a peaceful time, and condemned the false justification of terrorism in the name of the people of Kashmir.
Condemnation from the People of Kashmir
Abdullah revealed that the most powerful response came from ordinary Kashmiris:
“For the first time in 26 years, I have seen the people of Jammu and Kashmir come out condemning the attack, saying it was not done in our name. This gives me hope.”
He urged political leaders to avoid politicizing the tragedy, and instead focus on supporting the victims and strengthening unity across communities.
Assembly Resolution and National Response
The J&K Assembly passed a resolution condemning the Pahalgam terrorist attack, while proceedings were adjourned in honor of the victims. The resolution emphasized the values of Kashmiriyat, peace, and harmony, and supported the Centre’s response against terrorism.
Earlier, Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary moved a motion in support of the resolution and endorsed the Centre’s actions through the Cabinet Committee on Security.
Looking Forward
Omar Abdullah’s statement reflects a rare moment of bipartisan sensitivity in J&K’s politics. As India continues to reel from one of the deadliest attacks since the Pulwama strike in 2019, the Chief Minister’s words signal a pause on political agendas and a renewed focus on unity and healing.
