In a recent announcement, tech giant Oracle has made job cuts, cancelled new job offers, and reduced open positions, adding to the list of tech layoffs. The affected employees are from Oracle’s electronic healthcare records firm, Cerner, which was acquired by Oracle in December 2022.
Reduction of Open Positions in the Health Unit
According to insider reports, Oracle has also scaled back open positions within its health unit, citing troubles with a significant government contract. However, the company has not yet provided an official comment on this matter.
Layoffs Following Cerner Acquisition
Layoff news at Cerner came to light last month. After acquiring Cerner, a healthcare records firm, for $28.4 billion, Oracle halted raises and promotions and laid off thousands of employees in the unit. These actions took place as recently as May, a year after the acquisition closed in June the previous year.
Impact on Employees and Teams
The acquisition of Cerner added approximately 28,000 employees to Oracle’s workforce. Since then, Oracle has refrained from issuing raises or granting promotions, and earlier this year, the company announced that workers should not expect any such benefits until 2023. The layoffs affected various teams, including marketing, engineering, accounting, legal, and product, as stated by a former employee.
Development of National Health Records Database
Oracle, a major player in cloud technology, is actively working on developing a national health records database. Oracle’s Chairman and Chief Technology Officer, Larry Ellison, has reassured that all patient data in the database will be anonymized, with individual consent required for data sharing. Cerner’s expertise in digital information systems for hospitals and health systems will contribute to enabling medical professionals to deliver enhanced healthcare to patients and communities.
Patient Engagement System and Wearable Integration
In addition to the health records database, Oracle is also focusing on its patient engagement system, which has been under development during the pandemic. This system aims to collect information from wearables and home diagnostic devices, further enhancing the healthcare experience for patients.
Previous Layoffs and Ongoing Developments
It’s worth noting that in May, Oracle laid off over 3,000 employees at Cerner, with a pause on raises and promotions. These recent job cuts are an extension of the measures taken since the acquisition in June of the previous year.
