Pahalgam Terror Attack Fallout: Mehbooba Mufti Questions Farooq Abdullah’s Call for Tougher Action Against Pakistan
The aftermath of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir has ignited political debate, with Mehbooba Mufti, Chief of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), questioning the recent tough stance of Farooq Abdullah, President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), regarding Pakistan.
In a sharp response on Tuesday, Mehbooba Mufti highlighted inconsistencies in Farooq Abdullah’s earlier calls for dialogue versus his current demand for harsher action than the Balakot airstrikes of 2019.
Mehbooba Mufti’s Criticism
Speaking to ANI, Mehbooba Mufti said:
“I heard JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah saying that action tougher than Balakot should be taken. The policy of JKNC has been different. Sometimes he calls for talks, and sometimes for bombing.”
She emphasized that instead of focusing solely on retaliation, the priority should be on healing the wounds of the people affected by the attack.
Farooq Abdullah’s Toughened Stance
On Monday, Farooq Abdullah had called for actions tougher than the Balakot strike, questioning the effectiveness of previous measures in preventing terror incidents.
Abdullah stated:
“We must act so that such attacks never happen again. Pakistan has murdered humanity and must not expect compromises.”
He reaffirmed India’s unity, rejecting the two-nation theory and asserting:
“Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians — we are all one. We will give a befitting reply.”
Government’s Firm Measures Post-Attack
Following the April 22 attack, where 26 civilians lost their lives, the Indian government announced decisive steps:
- Suspension of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, a landmark 1960 agreement that had withstood multiple wars.
- Intensified counter-terrorism operations across Jammu and Kashmir, with security agencies maintaining operational secrecy due to the sensitivity of ongoing missions.
Sources indicate that targeted actions are underway, aimed at dismantling the cross-border terror infrastructure.
Pahalgam Attack: A Grim Reminder
The Pahalgam terror attack has been compared to the 2019 Pulwama attack, which resulted in the death of 40 CRPF personnel. Both incidents underscore the persistent threat of cross-border terrorism aimed at destabilizing Kashmir’s growing stability and development.
What Lies Ahead
With political voices divided between calls for dialogue and demands for tougher retaliation, the Indian government’s policy is firmly shifting toward uncompromising action.
As counter-terror operations intensify and diplomatic channels harden, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the next phase of India’s national security strategy in Jammu and Kashmir.
