In a legal saga unfolding in Panchkula, a same-sex relationship faces legal challenges as a 22-year-old petitioner seeks the release of her 19-year-old partner from parental custody.
The Relationship and Legal Battle
The petitioner and her partner entered into a relationship after meeting some time ago. Despite their connection, the partner’s parents strongly oppose the union. The parents attempted to persuade their daughter to sever ties with the petitioner. When she resisted, they escalated the situation by threatening harm to both and considering forced marriage.
Legal Action and Court Intervention
The petitioner made representations to the Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) and Haryana Women Commission, seeking assistance in rescuing her partner. Unfortunately, no action was taken. Subsequently, a habeas corpus petition was filed, leading the Punjab and Haryana High Court to intervene.
Court’s Directive
The High Court, hearing the habeas corpus petition, has instructed the state of Haryana to produce the 19-year-old and her parents before the court on January 4, 2024.
As this legal battle unfolds, it sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals in same-sex relationships, bringing attention to issues of autonomy and societal acceptance.
