Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his skepticism about the opposition parties’ meeting held in Patna, Bihar, aimed at forging unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Fadnavis stated that previous attempts at opposition unity in 2019 had failed and suggested that these alliances were formed by “dynast parties” to protect their family interests.
Opposition Parties’ Attempt to Save Their Families
Fadnavis claimed that the meeting in Patna was an attempt by “dynast parties” to form alliances and secure their family’s political future. He criticized Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, who had previously mocked Fadnavis for forming an alliance with Mehbooba Mufti, as he was now sitting beside her to discuss forging an alliance. Fadnavis argued that these parties are aware of the support Prime Minister Narendra Modi has garnered and must unite to maintain their influence.
Previous Failed Attempts and Future Prospects
Referring to the unsuccessful opposition attempt in 2019, Fadnavis expressed his belief that similar efforts in 2024 would yield no benefits. He emphasized that the people are with Prime Minister Modi, and under his leadership, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would secure even more seats than in previous elections.
Context of the Opposition Meeting
The opposition meeting in Patna aimed to strategize and form an anti-BJP front ahead of the upcoming general elections in 2024. Top leaders from various opposition parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, and Nationalist Congress Party, attended the meeting hosted by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav. The objective was to discuss a roadmap for countering the political dominance of the BJP and the NDA in the next election cycle.
