Key Highlights:
Mullanpur, April 9, 2025 — Rachin Ravindra was on fire in the powerplay for Chennai Super Kings, smashing 36 runs off just 21 deliveries, as the visitors looked to chase down Punjab Kings’ imposing total of 219. It was CSK’s second-highest powerplay score in IPL 2025, but the Kiwi all-rounder’s dismissal shortly after the fielding restrictions were lifted gave PBKS a much-needed breakthrough.
A Fiery Start for CSK By Rachin Ravindra
CSK came into the game with three consecutive losses, but Ravindra’s positive intent at the top helped turn the tide early in their innings. He took on both pace and spin, mixing calculated aggression with deft placement.
CSK posted 59 without loss in the powerplay – their second-best in five matches this season. Only their 62/1 against Mumbai Indians in the season opener was better.
While Ravindra dominated the scoring, his partner Devon Conway played the anchoring role. The pair looked set to lay a strong platform for CSK’s biggest chase of the tournament.
But Maxwell Halts the Momentum
Just as it seemed Ravindra would press on, Glenn Maxwell produced a moment of magic. In the 7th over, Ravindra stepped out in an attempt to continue his onslaught. Sensing the move early, Maxwell dragged the length back, allowing his off-break to spin away from the left-hander.
Ravindra was left stranded mid-pitch as the ball beat his bat and the keeper completed an easy stumping. The Kiwi walked back after a well-compiled 36 off 21 (4 fours, 2 sixes, SR 171.43).
Still a Mountain to Climb for CSK
While the powerplay effort was encouraging, CSK still trailed PBKS, who had notched 75/3 in their first six overs — 16 runs more than the Super Kings.
With the required rate still hovering near 11 per over, the focus now shifts to Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who joined Conway in the middle. Gaikwad has had a lukewarm season so far, and his role in stabilizing and accelerating will be crucial in the middle overs.
Ravindra’s Growing Value to CSK
Even in defeat, Ravindra continues to shine as a versatile top-order option for CSK. His ability to attack in the powerplay and bowl useful overs gives the team flexibility. If CSK are to bounce back this season, the New Zealand star will likely be a central figure in that push.
What’s Next?
With 160+ still needed and key batters yet to come, CSK’s chase hangs in the balance. But the tone has been set — all thanks to Rachin Ravindra’s fearless approach up front.
