The Ashok Gehlot-led government in Rajasthan has taken a significant step by demarcating 19 new districts and 3 new divisions in the state, ahead of the State Assembly Polls in 2023. With this move, the total number of districts in Rajasthan has reached 50, and the number of divisions stands at 10.
Fulfillment of a Long-Standing Promise

In an important Cabinet meeting held on Friday, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot fulfilled his long-standing promise to add 19 new districts to the state. This decision is aimed at improving governance, better administrative reach, and efficient delivery of government services to the people.
New Districts and Divisions
The newly added districts are Anupgarh, Balotra, Beawar, Deeg, Didwana, Dudu, Gangapur City, Jaipur City, Jaipur Rural, Jodhpur City, Jodhpur Rural, Kekdi, Kotputli, Khairthal, Neemkathana, Phalodi, Salumbar, Sanchore, and Shahpura. The three new divisions are Banswara, Pali, and Sikar.
The Need for Smaller Districts
Chief Minister Gehlot highlighted the geographical vastness of Rajasthan, emphasizing that many existing districts have corners situated more than 100 km apart, making it challenging for people to access government services. By creating smaller districts, the government aims to improve law and order maintenance and provide better administration to citizens.
Catching Up with Other States
CM Gehlot acknowledged that some other states in the country have been ahead of Rajasthan in creating new districts. For example, Madhya Pradesh, the second-largest state in the nation, has 52 districts. With a population of around 78 million, Rajasthan now stands at 50 districts, easing the burden on administrative offices and improving public service delivery.
The addition of these new districts and divisions comes as a crucial step by the Gehlot government to strengthen governance and facilitate effective administration ahead of the State Assembly Elections scheduled for later this year.
