Popular film and television actor Rakesh Bedi has reportedly fallen prey to a cyber fraud scheme while trying to sell his Pune flat. The fraudster, posing as an Army officer, managed to deceive Bedi and make off with Rs 85,000.
The Incident
According to Oshiwara police, Bedi, a resident of Lokhandwala and owner of a 2BHK flat in Pune’s Kondhwa area, decided to sell the property. On December 25, he received a call from an individual claiming to be Aditya Kumar, serving in the Army.
False Army Officer’s Scheme
The imposter expressed interest in buying the flat, asking Bedi for additional photographs. After reviewing the images, the fraudster informed Bedi that his senior officer wanted to purchase the flat for Rs 87 lakh. Subsequently, a supposed verification process began.
Deceptive Transactions
As part of the verification, the fraudster deposited Rs 1 into Bedi’s account, following which he requested banking details for a transfer of an additional Rs 50,000. However, this amount was not deposited as promised. Bedi was then instructed to use his wife’s bank account, resulting in the transfer of Rs 50,000 but with a subsequent claim of an error.
Refund Scam
To rectify the alleged mistake, Bedi was asked to deposit Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 for the refund process, with promises of complete repayment. Despite complying, Bedi received no refund, realizing he had fallen victim to a scam. He reported the incident to the police on Friday.
Police Investigation
The Oshiwara police have registered a case of cheating and cheating by impersonation. They are actively pursuing details of the beneficiary bank account involved in the fraudulent transactions.
This incident underscores the prevalence of cyber fraud and the importance of vigilance, even in seemingly legitimate transactions. As investigations continue, individuals are reminded to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of potential buyers in online dealings.
