Russia has responded to the latest sanctions imposed by the United States by banning entry to 500 individuals, including former president Barack Obama. This move comes as tensions escalate between the two countries over the Ukraine conflict. The United States added hundreds more companies and individuals to its sanctions blacklist as part of efforts to choke off Russia’s economy over the Ukraine offensive.
Retaliatory Measures
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated, “Washington should have learned a long time ago that not a single hostile step against Russia will be left unanswered.” Among those listed in the ban were prominent television hosts such as Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers, as well as CNN anchor Erin Burnett and MSNBC presenters Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough. Russia also blacklisted senators, congressmen, and think tank members “involved in the spread of Russophobic attitudes and fakes” and the heads of companies supplying weapons to Ukraine.
Denial of Consular Visit and Visa Refusal
In addition to the entry ban, Russia has denied a consular visit to detained US journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in March on charges of spying. This denial was triggered by Washington’s refusal to issue visas to journalists traveling to the United Nations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in April.
US Imposes Sweeping Sanctions
Meanwhile, the United States has imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia, targeting over 300 entities in response to its invasion of Ukraine. The punitive measures aim to tighten the vise on Vladimir Putin’s ability to wage the invasion and cut off Russian attempts to evade sanctions. These sanctions affect various sectors, including companies involved in importing, shipping, or manufacturing electronics components and semiconductors for Russia. The US Treasury Department also imposed sanctions on Russian intelligence services procurement networks and agents, as well as on Russia’s energy education and research institutions to limit its future extractive capabilities.
As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, these retaliatory measures and sanctions reflect the growing tensions between the two nations.
