Ryan Watts Retirement: Steelers Release Rookie CB After Career-Ending Neck Injury – April 2025 Update

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially released rookie cornerback Ryan Watts, marking the end of his brief professional football career. The decision follows medical consultations after a severe neck injury sustained during the 2024 preseason.

Career Cut Short by Injury

Ryan Watts, a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, suffered a significant neck injury during a preseason game against the Detroit Lions. The injury led to his placement on injured reserve for the entirety of the 2024 season.

After thorough evaluations by medical experts, team officials, and Watts’ representatives, it was determined that continuing his football career posed substantial health risks. Consequently, the Steelers have released Watts from the roster, and he has decided to retire from professional football.

Steelers’ Official Statement

In a statement released on April 28, 2025, Steelers General Manager Omar Khan expressed support for Watts:

“After consulting with our medical team, medical experts, and Ryan’s representatives, we all agree that it is in Ryan’s best interest to discontinue playing football at this time. We will continue to assist and support Ryan as he transitions to the next phase of his life.”

Watts’ Football Journey

Born on November 7, 2001, in Little Elm, Texas, Ryan Watts began his collegiate football career at Ohio State University before transferring to the University of Texas. During his time with the Longhorns, he earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors, showcasing his skills as a formidable defensive back.

The Steelers selected Watts with the 195th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, anticipating his potential contribution to the team’s secondary. However, his professional debut was halted due to the preseason injury.

Looking Ahead

While Ryan Watts’ time in the NFL was brief, his dedication and talent left a lasting impression on teammates and coaches. The Steelers organization has pledged ongoing support as he navigates life after football.

Watts’ retirement serves as a poignant reminder of the physical demands of professional sports and the importance of prioritizing long-term health and well-being.
