Samvidhan Bachao Rally: Congress Hits Out at ‘Fascist’ Forces – Gehlot Defends Gandhi Family in ED Row
As part of a nationwide campaign from April 25 to 30, the Indian National Congress has launched a “Samvidhan Bachao” (Save the Constitution) rally, with senior leaders like Ashok Gehlot and Mallikarjun Kharge addressing the public to highlight what they say are ongoing threats to India’s constitutional values.
Rally Against “Anti-Constitutional Powers”
Speaking in Jaipur, former Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot said the rally’s purpose is to raise awareness about “powers that don’t believe in the Constitution and are destroying it.”
“These rallies are happening across every district and local level. They are being organised to show the public how such powers are damaging our democratic framework,” Gehlot told the media.
He also used the occasion to criticize the Enforcement Directorate’s actions in the National Herald case, calling the charges against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi “insane” and “politically motivated.”
Gehlot on the National Herald Case
Gehlot recounted the history of the National Herald newspaper, calling it a symbol of India’s freedom movement and alleging that the Young India transaction was being falsely portrayed as a scam.
“If this can be done with our leaders, what will happen to ordinary citizens? These fascist tactics must be stopped,” he said, accusing the government of launching vendettas against opposition leaders.
Rally Framed as Defense of Constitution and Nation
Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa tied the rally to broader national concerns, referencing the recent Pahalgam terror attack and asserting that protecting the Constitution is equal to protecting the nation.
“The country stands with Prime Minister Modi against the attack, but the government must also protect democratic institutions,” Randhawa said, clarifying that Congress’s message is about unity and accountability.
Rising Political Heat Ahead of Elections
Girish Dotasara, Rajasthan Congress chief, said that rallies across the country are already underway and reflect the party’s national mobilisation strategy ahead of the 2024–25 electoral season.
“Wherever there’s suppression, our voice will rise. The AICC has committed fully to this movement,” he said.
The Bigger Picture
With the Samvidhan Bachao rally, Congress is not just campaigning—it is countering a narrative. It is attempting to reframe charges against its leaders as part of a larger struggle to protect democratic norms and draw public attention to what it calls institutional misuse. Whether this narrative resonates will be closely watched in the coming political weeks.
