In a recent conference organized by Sa-Dhan, Alok Kumar Choudhary, the managing director of the State Bank of India (SBI), emphasized the need for microfinance institutions (MFIs) to strengthen their focus on data privacy and cyber security. Choudhary’s remarks shed light on the critical aspects of data protection and digital security that MFIs should prioritize.
Capacity Building for Managing Future Challenges
Choudhary stressed the importance of capacity building within MFIs to effectively address the challenges that lie ahead. He emphasized that MFIs should be proactive in integrating with evolving regulations, especially in light of data privacy laws. With a significant amount of data being handled by these institutions, data privacy demands careful attention, necessitating the formulation of action plans to safeguard sensitive information.
Embracing Digital Transformation for Enhanced Customer Experience

The SBI MD also called for financial institutions, including MFIs, to work towards improving the efficiency of their transactions through digital means. He highlighted the evolving needs of customers in today’s dynamic landscape and stressed the importance of understanding what these bottom-of-the-pyramid customers require and how their desires can be fulfilled with ease.
SBI’s Contribution to Financial Inclusion
Choudhary elaborated on SBI’s active participation in the government’s financial inclusion drive, mentioning that the bank has opened 36% of the total accounts created under the PM Jan Dhan Yojana. This initiative has seen the opening of over 50 crore bank accounts in the past nine years, with a cumulative deposit balance exceeding Rs 2.03 lakh crore.
These statements from Alok Kumar Choudhary reflect the growing importance of data privacy and cyber security in the realm of microfinance institutions and the broader financial sector. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, ensuring the protection of sensitive data is paramount, while also embracing technological advancements for enhanced customer experiences.
