SBI mobile banking outage April 1 2025 sparked frustration among millions of customers as India’s largest public-sector bank faced yet another service disruption. Users across the country reported issues with internet banking, mobile banking, UPI transactions, and even fund transfers, marking the second such incident this month.
Key Highlights:
Nationwide Outage Hits SBI Services

As per data from outage tracking portal Downdetector, complaints about SBI mobile banking failures peaked between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM IST. Of all the reports:
- 64% were related to mobile banking issues
- 33% to failed fund transfers

The problems caused widespread inconvenience, with users taking to X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram to voice their frustration over failed transactions and login errors.
NPCI Statement on Banking Disruptions
Today due to financial year closing, some of the banks are facing intermittent transaction declines. UPI system is working fine, and we are working with the concerned banks for necessary redressal.
— NPCI (@NPCI_NPCI) April 1, 2025
Following the incident, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) released an official statement clarifying that the issue was not with the UPI system, but rather with the banks’ end due to financial year closing pressures:
“Today, due to financial year closing, some of the banks are facing intermittent transaction declines. The UPI system is working fine, and we are working with the concerned banks for necessary redressal.”
While NPCI’s clarification ruled out a systemic failure, it highlighted the strain banks experience during year-end reconciliation periods.
Not the First SBI Glitch in 2025
This is not an isolated event. Earlier, on March 11, 2025, SBI UPI and mobile banking services were down for over four hours, frustrating customers during peak hours. At the time, the bank confirmed the issue and said it was resolved by 5 p.m. the same day.
“Technical issues with the SBI UPI application stand resolved and it has been working fine since 5 p.m.,” said the bank in a public statement, apologizing for the inconvenience.
RBI’s Pressure on Banks to Avoid Disruptions
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been pushing commercial banks to:
- Ensure seamless connectivity across digital platforms
- Invest in backend infrastructure
- Reduce resolution time during service interruptions
- Adhere to cybersecurity protocols and uptime commitments
RBI has also warned of stern actions if it finds repeated non-compliance, especially by large public-sector banks with massive customer bases like SBI.
5 Key Highlights from SBI Mobile Banking Outage April 1 2025

- Widespread disruption affected mobile banking, UPI transactions, and fund transfers.
- Downdetector spike between 11:00–11:30 AM shows nationwide impact.
- NPCI blames fiscal year-end load, not UPI system failure.
- Second major outage after similar March 11 incident.
- RBI expected to seek answers amid increasing service disruptions.
Customer Reactions: Outrage on Social Media
Angry customers flooded social media platforms with screenshots, complaints, and memes over failed fund transfers and being unable to access their accounts.
A user tweeted:
“I tried sending money to my vendor, and the app crashed three times. What is going on, SBI?”
Another wrote:
“Every month, SBI has a glitch when people need it the most. Year-end or not, we deserve better infrastructure.”
The consistent glitches have raised doubts over SBI’s digital preparedness, despite servicing over 50 crore customers nationwide.
What Customers Should Do

If you’re still facing issues:
- Use alternative payment methods like NEFT, IMPS, or other UPI apps linked to different banks
- Monitor the official SBI Twitter handle for status updates
- Save transaction IDs and screenshots for failed payments for dispute resolution
- Wait for service restoration before initiating time-sensitive transactions
RBI’s Expected Response
Given the scale and recurrence of such disruptions, RBI is likely to:
- Seek detailed reports from SBI and other affected banks
- Audit backend systems and capacity
- Possibly issue penalties for repeated non-compliance
Earlier in 2024, the central bank imposed restrictions on another major bank for its inability to maintain consistent digital services. A repeat with SBI cannot be ruled out if outages persist.
SBI Mobile Banking Outage April 1 2025 Raises Alarm Over Digital Infrastructure
The latest SBI mobile banking outage on April 1, 2025, has yet again raised serious concerns about digital reliability in India’s banking sector. With NPCI attributing it to fiscal pressure and customers bearing the brunt, it is now imperative for banks—especially those with large customer bases—to invest in scalable, resilient, and fault-tolerant systems. As RBI continues its oversight, public trust in digital banking hangs in the balance.
