Security forces in Manipur’s Imphal East district released a group of militants affiliated with the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) outfit to local leaders following a confrontation with a mob. The incident occurred when the security forces were surrounded by the mob, led by women, preventing them from proceeding with their operation.
Security Forces’ Operation
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the army and the Assam Rifles launched an operation in Itham village in Imphal East district after midnight on Saturday. Prior to the search operation, the area was cordoned off to minimize inconvenience to the local residents. The operation resulted in the arrest of 12 KYKL cadres, including self-styled Lt Col Moirangthem Tamba alias Uttam, who was the mastermind behind an ambush on the 6th battalion of the DOGRA in 2015. The security forces also seized arms, ammunition, and war-like stores during the operation.
Mob Intervention
Despite repeated appeals from the security forces, a mob of approximately 1,500 people, including women and local leaders, encircled the area and prevented the forces from continuing their operation. Considering the sensitivity of using force against such a large and agitated mob, the officer in charge made a considerate decision to hand over all 12 militants to the local leaders, avoiding potential casualties and collateral damage. Subsequently, the Army and the Assam Rifles troops lifted the cordon and left the area, taking with them the recovered weapons and ammunition.
Indian Army’s Perspective
The operational commander’s mature decision showcased the humane approach of the Indian Army, emphasizing efforts to minimize collateral damage and prevent the situation from escalating amidst the ongoing unrest in Manipur. The Indian Army appeals to the people of Manipur to assist the security forces in maintaining law and order to restore peace and stability in the region.
