Severe Heatwave Alert India: Health Risk Escalates Across Regions

According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are defined when maximum temperatures exceed 40°C in plains and are at least 4.5°C above normal. When this deviation reaches 6.5°C or more, a severe heatwave is declared.

Doctors have reported a rise in heat-related illnesses, particularly in vulnerable groups like children, senior citizens, and outdoor workers. Major hospitals in Delhi and Hyderabad have seen increased cases of dehydration, heat cramps, and exhaustion.

What This Means for You

  • General Public: Avoid stepping out between 12 PM and 4 PM, stay hydrated, and wear light cotton clothing.
  • Workforce: Those working outdoors must use head protection, take regular breaks, and increase fluid intake.
  • School Authorities: Institutions in several districts may opt for early summer vacations or reduced timings.

How to Take Action

  • Follow IMD updates at mausam.imd.gov.in
  • Drink plenty of water, ORS, and fresh fruit juices; avoid alcohol and caffeine
  • Monitor symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, dry skin, and consult a doctor if needed
  • Use air coolers or fans and ensure cross-ventilation in enclosed spaces
  • Assist elderly and chronically ill neighbors during peak heat hours

Who Will Be Affected

  • Daily wage earners, delivery staff, and outdoor vendors, with limited heat protection options
  • Public transportation users, especially in non-air-conditioned buses and trains
  • Farmers, as high heat could damage crops and raise irrigation demand
  • Power grid operators, expected to face high energy demand and load stress

Rising Temperatures Highlight Urgency for Heatwave Preparedness

This Severe Heatwave Alert India underscores the need for climate resilience and infrastructure adaptation, as rising temperatures strain public health systems and daily life. With temperatures expected to remain high through the week, authorities have advised people to stay indoors, minimize travel, and cooperate with emergency services.

The IMD has also warned that similar conditions may prevail until April 26, with a slight easing expected after western disturbances hit parts of north India late Friday.
