Days after severe damage caused by rain-induced floods and landslides, the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are still grappling with the aftermath. Himachal Pradesh, including Manali and Mandi, experienced rainfall, exacerbating the already devastated areas. In Uttarakhand, the Badrinath National Highway was once again closed due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in the Chamoli district. Both states have been severely impacted by continuous rainfall, leading to flash floods and landslides.
Touring and Alert from State and Weather Authorities
To assess the situation, the Chief Ministers and other leaders of the ruling dispensation have been conducting visits to the affected areas. Meanwhile, the India Meteorology Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rainfall in both hill states over the next five days. Himachal Pradesh is under a yellow alert, while Uttarakhand is under an orange alert.
Himachal Pradesh Floods
Himachal Pradesh witnessed another round of rain in cities such as Mandi and Manali on Saturday. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has requested Rs 2,000 crore in interim aid from the Centre and plans to modify the relief manual to increase compensation for flood victims in the state. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the past week caused landslides, flash floods, and damage to infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh. The state government has already released Rs 1,100 crore for relief efforts, including funds for the Public Works Department, Jal Shakti Department, and State Disaster Relief Fund. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the state until July 18, forecasting heavy rainfall.
Uttarakhand Floods
In Uttarakhand, incessant rains have caused flood-related incidents, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including a seven-year-old child, in Haridwar district. The State Disaster Management Authority has created a flood map using Microwave Satellite Data to aid the district administration in planning and executing timely relief and rescue operations. Satellite analysis revealed that 511 villages in the district have been affected by waterlogging. The State Emergency Operation Center is coordinating the evacuation of people from affected villages and distributing food packets, drinking water, and relief kits. Various response forces, including the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Police, and Army, have been deployed in flood-affected areas. The Rishikesh-Kedarnath National Highway and Badrinath National Highway are currently closed due to landslides, with efforts underway to clear the routes. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Uttarakhand until July 18, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall.
