Shadow And Bone Season 2: Twist Ending Explained And What To Expect From Season 3

The Shadow and Bone season 2 finale left fans reeling, but what does it all mean? In this article, we break down the key events of the ending and what we can expect from season 3 on Netflix.

Alina’s Quest for the Amplifiers

The main thrust of season 2 was Alina’s quest for the second and third amplifiers to magnify her sun-summoner gifts and destroy the Fold forever. She first found the sea whip, then turned her attention to the Firebird, which was revealed to be Mal, her childhood friend and romantic interest. Unfortunately, Mal had to die if Alina was going to fulfill her destiny, but a new plan was hatched to bring him back from the brink.

The Final Showdown with Kirigan

Unfortunately, the Darkling (Kirigan) expands the Fold and ambushes everyone before the plan can be set in motion. Alina tries to connect to the Firebird’s power anyway, but Kirigan brutally injures Mal with the Cut. With Kirigan and his shadow monsters still a threat, Alina manages to kill him with the Neshyenyer sword.

Mal’s Fate and Season 3

With Kirigan out of the way, Alina turns her attention back to Mal, who dies from his injuries. Alina declares her love for him one last time before stabbing him, which destroys the entire Fold and all the Volcra inside. But even with the Fold gone, Mal struggles to find his purpose now that he’s no longer the Firebird. He and Alina decide to separate so Mal can go off on a new path as a privateer. As for what might happen in season 3, we’ll just have to wait and see.
