Ishu Kalra | The dowry system in India has always been a curse to its society and, moreover, its daughters. While the government looks to promote the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” (Save Daughters,Educate Daughters) campaign, it has largely failed to deal with the curse of the dowry system during marriages in India.
A dowry is termed as a gift. It may be monetary or may be in the form of an object, gifted to the groom’s family by the bride’s family at the time of their marriage. But the humiliation doesn’t stop here as the in-laws sometimes continue to harass the bride even after the marriage. [ Ishu Kalra ]
The government had banned the practice in 1961 itself by implementing the Dowry Prohibition Act, but the lack of implementation is the reason that social evil is still prevailing in society. According to a report, around 8000 women in India die every year just because of this social demon who succumbs to the demands of their in-laws. [ Ishu Kalra ]
From time to time, the government has taken up the matter seriously, but the problem lies within the thinking of the orthodox mindset, which can be changed only by working on the ground reality. Akshay Kumar’s latest venture, Raksha Bandhan, has also shed light on the topic recently. But there are real-life heroes as well who are working in the direction of eradicating this social evil from our society.
Ishu Kalra’s Humanity NGO has been working for the empowerment of women and has helped them get justice against in-laws who have been harassing them for dowry demands. Ishu Kalra believes that dower not only destroys the foundation of a sacrament like marriage but also is the main reason why fathers even today don’t want to raise a daughter.
Thus, Kalra says that we need to work on the ground reality, especially in the remote areas where the practice is still common and is destroying the future of daughters in India.
