The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the onset of the monsoon in Kerala today, June 8. The southwest monsoon has arrived in Kerala, marking the official beginning of the rainy season in the region.
Delayed Onset and Current Status
The monsoon onset this year has come a week later than the usual date of June 1. Earlier predictions anticipated the monsoon’s arrival on June 4, but it was later revised to June 7 with a three-day error margin by Skymet. However, it has finally set in today, bringing relief to the region.
According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has not only reached Kerala but has also advanced into other parts of the south Arabian Sea, central Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area, south Tamil Nadu, the Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar, and various parts of southwest, central, and northeast Bay of Bengal.
Impact of Cyclone Biparjoy
Despite the monsoon’s onset, there is a concern regarding Cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to affect the moisture supply to the monsoon. The cyclonic storm has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm over the east-central Arabian Sea. It is currently moving nearly northwards with a speed of 5 kmph and is centered near latitude 13.9°N and longitude 66.0°E.
The IMD has issued warnings to fishermen in the coastal areas of Kerala, urging them not to venture into the sea due to the cyclone’s presence. The cyclone is predicted to intensify further over the next 48 hours and move north-northwestwards over the next three days.
As the monsoon progresses, the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy will need to be closely monitored to assess its effect on rainfall patterns in Kerala and other regions.
With the IMD’s declaration of the monsoon onset in Kerala, the much-awaited rainy season has begun in the region. However, the presence of Cyclone Biparjoy poses a potential challenge to the monsoon’s progress.
