Stephen Fleming Analyzes CSK’s Narrow Loss to Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati

In a thrilling last-over finish, the Rajasthan Royals held their nerve to defeat Chennai Super Kings by six runs in Guwahati. Post-match, CSK’s head coach, Stephen Fleming, provided his insights into where his team faltered and what went wrong in the key moments of the game.

PowerPlay Struggles: Bowling and Batting Issues

Fleming pointed out that the difference between the two teams came during the PowerPlays. “Our bowling in the PowerPlay went for nearly 80 runs, and when we batted, we could only manage around the early 40s. That’s reflected on the scoreboard and was the key difference,” he said. The stark contrast in performances during the first six overs was evident, and it played a crucial role in CSK’s inability to chase down Rajasthan’s target.

Fielding and Team Form Concerns

Another area Fleming highlighted was the team’s fielding. He admitted that CSK’s fielding was sloppy compared to Rajasthan Royals, whose fielding was outstanding. “We were sloppy in the field compared to Rajasthan, which was outstanding,” he added. Fleming acknowledged that this was one of the major takeaways from the loss and emphasized that improvements were necessary in this area.

Team Combinations and the Learning Process

Looking at the bigger picture, Fleming reflected on the challenges of starting a new cycle with a slightly out-of-form team. “This is a new group; it’s different from the past. We are still learning about the team combinations and getting to know the players—what they can and can’t do,” he explained. He stressed that the start of a new cycle is always difficult, and despite the mistakes, CSK is pushing hard to find their best form.

Key Moments That Changed the Course of the Match

Fleming also discussed a couple of crucial moments in the match that turned the tide in Rajasthan Royals’ favor. He particularly singled out Riyan Parag’s catch as a key turning point. “I think Riyan Parag’s catch was the turning point. The Dube match-up was going our way, but Hasaranga had the courage to toss it up. You can’t deny that,” Fleming said. Hasaranga’s ability to take the risk with his deliveries had a significant impact on the outcome.

Fleming also praised Hasaranga for his performance, including the key wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad. “Even Gaikwad’s wicket was very clever. He held his nerve and had a good day,” he noted, acknowledging the spin bowler’s contribution to Rajasthan’s victory.

Looking Ahead: CSK’s Redemption Opportunity

With little time to reflect, CSK now faces the challenge of redemption as they prepare to take on the Delhi Capitals in their next fixture. Fleming remains optimistic, despite the loss, and is focused on getting the team’s campaign back on track. “There’s work to do, but we’re not far away,” he said, highlighting that CSK’s potential is still evident, and the team will work hard to improve and bounce back from this defeat.
