According to a recent study published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour, married people who engage in extramarital affairs have been found to exhibit satisfaction with their actions and show little remorse. The research challenges commonly held beliefs about infidelity, shedding light on the motivations and experiences of individuals who cheat on their partners.
Understanding the Psychology of Infidelity
The study aimed to delve into the psychological experiences of individuals who seek and participate in extramarital affairs. Conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University of Western Ontario, the survey involved nearly 2,000 active users of Ashley Madison, a website that facilitates extramarital encounters.
Mixed Emotions and Unsatisfied Sexual Desires
Participants were asked about the state of their marriages, their reasons for seeking an affair, and their overall emotional state. The majority of respondents, who were predominantly middle-aged males, expressed strong emotional attachment to their partners but reported limited sexual satisfaction.
Sexual Dissatisfaction as a Common Motivation
Sexual dissatisfaction emerged as the most frequently cited reason for engaging in an affair, with other motivations including a desire for independence and sexual variety. Surprisingly, fundamental relationship issues such as a lack of love or anger towards a spouse were among the least-mentioned reasons for infidelity.
Challenging Assumptions about Long-Term Monogamy
The findings of this study challenge the notion that individuals in committed relationships will be completely satisfied with monogamous sex for the duration of their lives. While not indicative of every relationship, the research suggests that cheating may be a relatively common aspect of human relationships.
