It has been a week since the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) issued a public notice inviting objections and suggestions regarding its proposal to remove the heritage structure, the Sunehri Bagh Mosque. The NDMC received an overwhelming response, with over 50,000-60,000 responses as of Thursday.
Diverse Opposition
Heritage conservationists and Muslim minority organizations have actively participated, expressing their opposition to the demolition through emails. Notably, the Indian Muslim History handle on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) has played a significant role in generating responses.
NDMC’s Response
The NDMC is currently in the process of reviewing the received emails, checking for any possible duplication in favor of or against the demolition. The organization plans to tally more responses before presenting a collection to the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC).
HCC Meeting and Decision
The HCC is yet to schedule a meeting to discuss the Sunehri Bagh Mosque issue. However, due to the recent resignation of some HCC members and the unavailability of others, the demolition is not expected to take place until January 8.
The fate of the mosque as a grade 3 heritage structure hinges on the HCC’s decision, which will be influenced by the responses collected by the NDMC. The involvement of the traffic commissioner in the final decision-making process adds another layer to this ongoing issue.
