The Supreme Court has recently granted BV Srinivas, the youth Congress chief, interim protection from arrest in a harassment case filed against him in Assam. The case was lodged by Angkita Dutta, the former chief of the party’s youth wing in Assam, who accused Srinivas of persistent harassment and making sexist comments. The court’s decision provides temporary relief to Srinivas as the case continues.
Allegations of Harassment and Police Complaint
Angkita Dutta filed a police complaint against BV Srinivas at the Dispur Police Station in Guwahati, Assam, accusing him of harassment over her gender for a period of approximately six months. Dutta alleged that Srinivas made sexist comments and threatened her with dire consequences if she reported his behavior.
Intervention of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President
According to Dutta, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah intervened in the matter. Dutta visited Borah’s house, where he assured her that Srinivas would not file a defamation case against her and requested her to remain silent for 48 hours. However, shortly after leaving Borah’s place, Dutta received a tweet notifying her that a defamation notice had been served against her. This incident raised questions about the value of Borah’s commitment to the matter.
Expulsion from the Party and Accusations against Rahul Gandhi
As a result of her actions, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) expelled Dutta from the primary membership of the party for a period of six years, citing her involvement in “anti-party activities.” Dutta also accused senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of failing to take action against Srinivas despite being informed of the matter several months ago. The Congress party dismissed these charges as politically motivated.
The interim protection granted by the Supreme Court allows BV Srinivas to avoid arrest in the harassment case while the legal proceedings continue. The court’s decision will have significant implications for both Srinivas and Dutta as they navigate the legal process and address the allegations and counter-allegations.
