Shahid Diwas 2025: Honouring the Heroes of India’s Freedom Struggle

Shahid Diwas: On March 23, 1931, India witnessed the execution of three young revolutionaries—Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru. They were sentenced to death by the British colonial government for their role in the Lahore Conspiracy Case, a pivotal moment in India’s fight for independence. Since then, this day is observed as Shahid Diwas, or Martyrs’ Day, to honor their supreme sacrifice.

PM Narendra Modi Pays Tribute

On Shaheed Diwas 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the martyrs. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he said:

“Today, our nation remembers the supreme sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. Their fearless pursuit of freedom and justice continues to inspire us all.”

Bhagat Singh’s Death and the Story Behind It

At the age of just 23, Bhagat Singh became a national symbol of courage and resistance. Along with Sukhdev (23) and Rajguru (22), he was hanged at Lahore Central Jail by the British on March 23, 1931.

Their crime? A bold, non-lethal bombing in the Central Legislative Assembly in 1929, aimed at drawing attention to oppressive colonial laws. Instead of escaping, they courted arrest to use their trial as a stage to amplify their revolutionary message.

Why Shahid Diwas Matters

Shaheed Diwas is not just a day of remembrance—it is a symbol of resistance, selflessness, and the relentless pursuit of justice. These young men gave up their lives not in fear, but with a belief that future generations of Indians would live free.

Bhagat Singh, often called the ‘Shaheed-e-Azam’ (Martyr of the Nation), was a thinker, writer, and ideologue who inspired millions. His clarity of vision, sharp intellect, and firm resolve to fight injustice, even at the cost of his life, continue to inspire activists, leaders, and youth across India.

Legacy of Shaheed Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh’s revolutionary writings, especially his essays on freedom and nationalism, remain relevant even today. His idea of true independence wasn’t just the ousting of foreign rule—it was the liberation of the mind, the removal of inequality, and the birth of a fair and just society.

His iconic quote still resonates:

“They may kill me, but they cannot kill my ideas. They can crush my body, but they will not be able to crush my spirit.”

As India observes Shahid Diwas 2025, it becomes our responsibility to not just remember these martyrs but to uphold the values they fought for—freedom, justice, and equality. Let their legacy continue to inspire action, reflection, and national pride.
