Mundra Port Sets New Record: 16 MMT Cargo In A Month

Mundra Port, a flagship of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), has set a remarkable record by handling an unprecedented cargo volume of 16.1 million metric tons (MMT) in the month of October. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the port and positions it as the largest port in India, with 102 MMT of cargo handled on a year-to-date (YTD) basis, reflecting a robust 9% year-over-year (YoY) growth. This exceptional performance comes as Mundra Port managed to surpass the 100 MMT milestone within just 210 days, breaking last year’s record of 231 days.
Double-Digit Growth and Milestones

Mundra Port reported double-digit YoY growth in key sectors, including containers (10%) and liquids and gas (14%). Notably, the port reached another milestone by handling 4.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in a mere 203 days, surpassing the previous year’s achievement of 225 days. Furthermore, Mundra Port diversified its cargo portfolio by adding new cargo types such as Hydrolysis Pi Gas (HPG). On a YTD basis, it accommodated over 2,480 ships and serviced over 11,500 rakes.
Strategic Location and Deep Draft Capabilities
Mundra Port’s success can be attributed to its strategic location, making it an ideal choice for handling large vessels. With its ability to maintain a deep draft, the port is well-equipped to accommodate oversized ships. In a notable instance, in July 2023, Mundra Port successfully berthed the MV MSC Hamburg, one of the largest ships ever recorded, measuring 399 meters in length and 54 meters in width, with a carrying capacity of 15,908 TEUs and a reported draught of 12 meters. In 2021, the port made history by accommodating the 13,892 TEU APL Raffles, the largest container vessel ever to call at any Indian port. This Singapore-registered vessel boasts dimensions of 397.88 meters in length and 51 meters in width.
