Tej Pratap Yadav’s Emotional Plea to Lalu-Rabri After RJD Expulsion Sparks Internal Rift

Patna — In a move that has stirred both emotion and political speculation, Tej Pratap Yadav, the eldest son of Lalu Prasad Yadav, broke his silence Sunday morning after being expelled from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Posting an emotional note on social media, he reached out to his parents with folded hands — and a sharp rebuke for those he believes have driven a wedge in the family.
मेरे प्यारे मम्मी पापा….
— Tej Pratap Yadav (@TejYadav14) May 31, 2025
“My whole world is just you,” he wrote in Hindi, addressing his mother and father directly. “God is second to you. If I have you, I have everything. I don’t want anything else.”
The post came days after his ouster from the party — a step many in the RJD say was inevitable, given the tensions that had simmered for years between him and his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav, who now leads the party.
Family Drama in Public View
Tej Pratap’s tone was tender toward his parents, but laced with anger toward unnamed party insiders. “Had you not been there, neither would this party exist, nor would those greedy people who now play politics with me,” he wrote.
While he didn’t name names, his comment was seen as a clear jibe at close aides of Tejashwi and senior party leaders who had pushed for disciplinary action against him.
The RJD leadership has so far refrained from commenting officially on the expulsion, but multiple senior leaders have confirmed off-record that it was no longer “sustainable” to allow Tej Pratap to operate as a parallel voice.
“He crossed a line too many times. The party has tolerated enough,” said a senior functionary based in Patna, adding that Lalu Yadav was informed before the final decision was taken.
Years of Friction
The tensions inside Bihar’s first family are not new. For over half a decade, Tej Pratap and Tejashwi have had a rocky relationship, marked by public disagreements, veiled insults, and competing visions of their father’s legacy.
Tej Pratap, more flamboyant and prone to theatrics, has long felt ignored in party strategy and sidelined during elections. Tejashwi, who led the party through the 2020 assembly elections and has since emerged as the primary face of the RJD, has chosen to ignore the barbs — but insiders say the rift has grown increasingly difficult to manage.
The latest move suggests a breaking point has been reached.
“This isn’t just a fight between siblings. It’s about control over the future of the party,” said political commentator D.N. Jha. “With the 2025 Bihar elections not too far away, Tejashwi needs a stable ship. Tej Pratap was seen as a distraction, even a liability.”
Behind Closed Doors
The trigger for the expulsion, according to those familiar with internal developments, was a series of closed-door meetings in which state leaders pushed for decisive action. Among the concerns cited were Tej Pratap’s alleged interference in candidate selection, his absence from key campaign events, and repeated social media posts that embarrassed the party.
“It was death by a thousand cuts,” said an RJD district president from north Bihar.
Some party insiders also point to an incident in April where Tej Pratap reportedly lashed out at a senior strategist during a coordination meeting, accusing him of “ruining the Yadav legacy.”
Still, the expulsion was not a move taken lightly. Tej Pratap, for all his volatility, remains a symbol of Lalu Yadav’s early political journey and holds sway in select pockets of rural Bihar.
Silence from the Patriarch
What complicates the story further is the silence of Lalu Prasad Yadav himself. Sources close to the family say he has chosen not to speak publicly or privately about the expulsion, largely due to his poor health. Rabri Devi, who has often acted as the emotional glue within the family, is also said to be “deeply pained” but resigned to the reality.
A senior RJD MLA summed it up bluntly: “This wasn’t Tejashwi’s decision alone. The family was on board. It had to be done.”
But Tej Pratap’s emotional post appears to be an attempt to reopen communication — not through the party, but through the only channel he believes still matters: his parents.
What Happens Next?
Whether Tej Pratap plans to form his own party or join another remains unclear. In the past, he floated a vague youth outfit — Chhatra Janshakti Parishad — which never really took off. In recent months, he’s been seen meeting leaders from smaller outfits, but there’s no confirmation yet of a political pivot.
“Don’t write him off just yet,” said a former RJD leader now with the Jan Adhikar Party. “Tej Pratap still commands a following in areas like Mahua and parts of Vaishali. If he plays his cards right, he could become a problem for the RJD.”
Others are more skeptical. “He lacks structure, discipline, and organisation,” said political analyst Meera Rai. “In Bihar, you need more than just a surname.”
Larger Political Backdrop
The episode comes at a particularly precarious time for the RJD, which is still licking its wounds after a poor showing in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. As part of the INDIA bloc, the party underperformed in key constituencies, even as the BJP-JD(U) combine held firm across the state.
Tejashwi, insiders say, is now in damage-control mode — conducting post-mortems, weeding out weak candidates, and centralising campaign command. In that equation, having a wildcard like Tej Pratap complicates things.
“For Tejashwi, it’s about survival. He can’t afford another distraction,” said a strategist working closely with the INDIA alliance.
The BJP, meanwhile, is keeping a close eye on developments. Party leaders in Bihar are reportedly already working on strategies to exploit the RJD’s internal divisions, particularly in constituencies where the Yadav vote is critical.
A Message That Hit Home?
Tej Pratap’s post has drawn mixed reactions. Some see it as heartfelt and sincere — the cry of a sidelined son seeking reconciliation. Others view it as strategic, perhaps even manipulative.
But within the RJD, there’s little appetite for reopening the door.
“We’ve moved on,” a senior party functionary said late Sunday evening. “Let’s see if he does too.”
Still, it’s clear that the drama in Bihar’s first political family is far from over. And for a state where personal ties and political ambition are often entangled, the fallout from this episode may shape alliances, equations — and even the upcoming assembly polls.
