The Territorial Army has taken decisive action to address the fuel and essential commodity shortages in Manipur following recent violent clashes. The state faced a severe crisis as employees and contract workers of oil marketing companies were unable to reach installations due to security constraints and evacuations. As a result, key oil installations like the Imphal Aviation Fueling Station, Malom Bulk Oil Depot, and the Sekmai Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bottling plant were either closed or operating at reduced capacity.
Deployment of 414 ASC Battalion Marketing TA
To tackle the critical situation, the 414 Army Service Corps Battalion Marketing Territorial Army (414 ASC Battalion Marketing TA) was deployed within 48 hours of receiving orders. The battalion played a crucial role in managing the three vital oil installations mentioned earlier. Their primary objective was to ensure a steady supply of fuel and essential commodities in Manipur.
Overcoming Operational Challenges
With relentless hard work, the 414 ASC Battalion Marketing TA successfully made the Malom Bulk Oil Depot fully operational within 12 hours of deployment. This involved dispatching oil-filled tankers, decanting Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) tankers, and refueling both civil and defense flights. Impressed by their performance, the initial tasking was expanded, and the battalion was further assigned to assist in the operations of the Sekmai LPG bottling plant, located 26 kilometers from Imphal.
Trained Workforce and Expertise
The 414 ASC Battalion Marketing TA, raised in 1983 by the Indian government, is affiliated with the Marketing Division and comprises over 100 employees of Indian Oil. These dedicated individuals undergo training by both the Indian Army and Indian Oil to handle various oil installations independently. They are well-versed in operating different oil locations across the country and are equipped to handle emergencies, whether internal or external.
The timely intervention of the Territorial Army and the efforts of the 414 ASC Battalion Marketing TA have played a crucial role in ensuring the supply of fuel and essential commodities in crisis-hit Manipur. Despite the challenging circumstances, their dedication and expertise have contributed significantly to managing the crisis and supporting the affected population.
