Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar has arrived in Delhi to convene a meeting of the party’s working committee. This gathering comes amidst a growing tussle between the two factions within the NCP, prompting a closer examination of the power and authority vested in the working committee as per the NCP’s constitution, which has been submitted to the Election Commission (EC).
Sharad Pawar Arrives in Delhi for NCP Working Committee Meeting

Sharad Pawar, the President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has reached Delhi to conduct a crucial meeting of the party’s working committee. This move comes in response to recent comments made by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who openly questioned when his 83-year-old uncle, Sharad Pawar, would retire from active politics. In preparation for the meeting, Sharad Pawar has gathered with 16 MLAs and party office-bearers, collecting affidavits from party workers expressing their unwavering trust in the leadership of Sharad Pawar and Jayant Patil.
Tussle Between NCP Factions Raises Questions about Working Committee’s Power
The ongoing conflict between the two factions within the NCP has brought attention to the powers and authority of the party’s working committee, as outlined in the NCP’s constitution. This document, which has been submitted to the Election Commission, provides insights into the functioning and decision-making capabilities of the working committee. As the tussle between the factions escalates, it becomes imperative to understand the role and potential resolutions that can be offered by the working committee.
NCP Constitution and Authority of the Working Committee
According to the NCP’s constitution, the working committee consists of the Party President, the Leader of the Party in Parliament, and 23 other members. Among these members, 12 are elected by the National Council (NC) following the rules set by the working committee, while the remaining members are appointed by the President. The constitution also specifies that a minimum of eight working committee members must be present to hold a meeting, constituting a quorum.
Key Functions and Responsibilities of the NCP Working Committee
The NCP’s working committee serves as the highest executive authority within the party. It is responsible for implementing party policies and programs, as established by the party and the National Council (NC). The committee is accountable to the NC and holds the final authority in interpreting and applying the provisions of the NCP’s constitution. Additionally, the working committee has the power to frame rules for the organization’s functioning, issue instructions consistent with the constitution, supervise and control State Committees, Union Territories, and subordinate committees, take disciplinary action against committees or individuals (excluding the NC), and relax the application of specific provisions in special cases.
Members of the NCP Working Committee
The NCP’s national convention, held in Delhi in September 2022, appointed the national office-bearers and working committee members. In addition to Sharad Pawar, the 12-member working committee includes prominent figures such as Praful Patel (from the Ajit Pawar faction), SupriyaSule, Ajit Pawar (from the rebel NCP faction), Tatkare (from the Ajit Pawar faction), Chhagan Bhujbal (from the Ajit Pawar faction), Fouzia Khan, P.C. Chacko, and others.
Working Committee’s Role in Resolving the NCP Crisis
As the conflict within the NCP intensifies, the role and authority of the working committee become paramount in resolving the dispute between the two factions. The committee holds the power to interpret the party’s constitution and make decisions in accordance with its provisions. By implementing party policies, supervising committees, and taking disciplinary actions, the working committee can play a crucial role in resolving the ongoing crisis. The upcoming meeting of the working committee, convened by Sharad Pawar, holds significant importance in addressing the issues and bringing stability to the party.
