Lawyers across the state of Uttar Pradesh have decided to abstain from work in protest against the recent Hapur lathicharge incident. This move comes as a response to the alleged police action against lawyers who were peacefully protesting the filing of a false case against Advocate Priyanka Tyagi in Hapur.
Emergency Meeting of Lawyers’ Body
The protest gained momentum after an emergency meeting of the lawyers’ body in Prayagraj. During the meeting, members expressed their anger over the lack of action taken against those responsible for the police lathi-charge on lawyers in Hapur. Despite a request from the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court to resume work, lawyers decided to continue their protest.
Three-Day Lawyers’ Strike Announced
In response to the incident, the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council announced a three-day lawyers’ strike from September 4-6. The strike aims to draw attention to the lathicharge incident and demand justice for the affected lawyers.
Government Forms Special Investigation Team
The government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has formed a four-member committee to investigate the Hapur incident. Retired district judge Hari Nath Pandey has been appointed as the chairman of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) responsible for looking into all aspects of the incident.
Court’s Intervention
The court has also stepped in to ensure that no coercive action is taken against any lawyer, regardless of whether they were named in the incident. This intervention aims to protect the rights and interests of the legal community.
The protest against the Hapur lathicharge incident by lawyers in Uttar Pradesh highlights their demand for justice and accountability in the face of alleged police brutality. As the strike continues, all eyes are on the government and the SIT to conduct a thorough investigation and address the concerns of the legal fraternity.
