On November 15, 2023, an under-construction tunnel on the Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, collapsed at 5:30 am. The tunnel, intended to connect Silkyara and Dandalgaon, trapped 40 workers. Despite officials assuring their safety with established communication via walkie-talkies and the supply of food and oxygen through a water pipe, two and a half days have passed since the incident.
Rescue Operation Updates
Rescue workers are employing a “trenchless” technique to free the trapped individuals. The operation involves inserting large-diameter mild steel pipes through the rubble using an auger machine. However, complications arose when parts of the machine broke upon encountering a boulder. As a response, a second auger drilling machine has been brought to the site to continue the rescue efforts.
Escaping the Debris
The latest updates indicate that the rescue workers initiated the process of inserting a two-meter-long pipe through the debris on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the machine encountered difficulties due to a boulder, leading to the need for a replacement machine.
Safety Measures
While the workers remain in contact through walkie-talkies and receive essential supplies, the urgency of the situation is emphasized by the elapsed time since the collapse.
The rescue operation continues with the deployment of additional equipment, highlighting the challenges faced in extricating the trapped workers from the collapsed tunnel.
