In an inaugural address at the first regional conference on ‘Access to Legal Aid: Strengthening Access to Justice in the Global South,’ Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar urged nations of the Global South to follow India’s lead in reevaluating outdated colonial laws perpetuating prejudice against local populations.
Embracing a Brighter Future

He highlighted the burden imposed on vulnerable sections of society by colonial legal regimes, designed to be harsh and exploitative. Drawing attention to India’s example, he urged other nations to initiate similar reviews.
CJI DY Chandrchud’s Insights
Chief Justice DY Chandrchud, speaking at the conference, noted that several constitutions in the Global South recognize the existence of indigenous minorities historically subjected to prejudice. These constitutions incorporate special provisions to safeguard the rights of these minorities.
A Common Threat

The Vice-President called for a departure from the oppressive nature of these laws and urged nations to follow India’s lead in undertaking comprehensive reviews.
The call to action comes at a time when nations worldwide are reconsidering and rectifying historical injustices embedded in their legal systems. The conference serves as a platform for discussions on enhancing legal aid and access to justice, marking a step toward a more equitable future.
