Several Indian cricketers, both capped and uncapped, showcased exceptional skills during the recently-concluded 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Among them, Shubman Gill of the Gujarat Titans stood out as the highest run-getter, earning the Orange Cap and breaking multiple records. Gill accumulated 890 runs in 17 matches, averaging 59.33, including three centuries. He joins the elite list of batters who have scored three or more tons in a single IPL season, alongside Virat Kohli and Jos Buttler.
Wasim Akram’s Perspective
Despite Shubman Gill’s outstanding performance, Wasim Akram, a former Pakistani pace bowler and a highly respected figure in cricket, believes that Ruturaj Gaikwad from the Chennai Super Kings has a bright future in Indian cricket. Gaikwad carried his impressive form from the previous season and scored a total of 590 runs in 16 IPL matches, including four half-centuries. Notably, his composed innings of 26 runs in 16 balls during the rain-affected final between CSK and GT helped his team secure their record-equaling fifth IPL title.
Wasim Akram praised Ruturaj Gaikwad for his ability to perform under pressure and his fitness. Gaikwad was initially selected as a reserve player for the upcoming India vs. Australia World Test Championship Final but won’t be able to travel to England due to his marriage. Yashasvi Jaiswal from the Rajasthan Royals, another breakout player in IPL 2023, has replaced Gaikwad in the Indian squad.
