Will Smith is staging a powerful creative return with his first music album in 20 years, a world tour, and a message of growth and reflection. Following a period marked by controversy, the Oscar and Grammy winner is embracing music as a medium to reconnect with himself and his audience.
Key Highlights:
Titled “Based on a True Story,” Smith’s fifth studio album releases this Friday. It explores his emotional journey post-Oscars controversy and serves as a reflection on the personal challenges he’s faced. “Every song is about some part of myself that I discovered or wanted to explore,” Smith said.
A New Chapter Through Music

Smith’s new album features collaborations with Big Sean, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Teyana Taylor, Jaden Smith, Jac Ross, and Kanye West’s Sunday Service Choir. While gospel influences run deep, Smith doesn’t label the project as a gospel album. His faith, however, plays a major role in guiding the tone and message.
The album is the first of three that Smith plans to release this year, each representing a different “season” of his life. The current project, Rave in the Wasteland, mirrors his readiness to face past missteps with introspection and honesty.
Resilience in the Face of Controversy

The release comes two years after the now-infamous Oscars slap incident involving comedian Chris Rock, which resulted in a 10-year ban from the ceremony. Smith’s reputation was further tested by his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s memoir, which reignited discussions around their relationship.
Despite criticism from public figures like Jim Carrey and Wanda Sykes, Smith has taken the time to grow from the experience. “There’s a certain psychological and emotional fortitude that you cultivate from leaning into the difficulty,” he said.
Influenced by Pema Chödrön, his late grandmother, and Nelson Mandela, Smith now approaches adversity as “divine curriculum” — vital for personal growth and spiritual confidence.
‘The Greatest Creative Run’ of His Life
As part of his comeback, Smith is launching his first-ever headline tour, kicking off June 25 in Morocco and concluding in September in Paris. The tour will span across Europe, featuring different acts highlighting phases of his life — from the early DJ Jazzy Jeff days to his blockbuster film legacy and new creative energy.
Classic hits like “Summertime” and “Miami” will feature alongside tracks from his new album, offering fans a complete artistic experience.

Alongside the music, Smith has multiple films in pre-production including Hancock 2, I Am Legend 2, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. “This is about to be the greatest creative run of my entire career,” he declared.
As Smith embraces this new era, he’s not just rebuilding his image — he’s rewriting his legacy.
