Shashi Tharoor, the Congress leader, spoke to former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s son on Friday and apologised for a tweet that incorrectly stated the BJP veteran’s death.
Mr. Tharoor and a few news organisations announced Ms. Mahajan’s death on Thursday (78). However, after BJP leaders pointed out that she was fine, the Congress MP and others deleted the tweets.
Mr. Tharoor stated in a tweet on Friday, “I spoke with Sumitra Mahajan ji’s son to express my heartfelt apologies for last night’s confusion. He was exceedingly gracious and understanding.
I’m relieved to hear she’s doing much better. I conveyed my heartfelt wishes to her and her family.” Following Mr. Tharoor’s and others’ tweets about her demise on Thursday night, Ms. Mahajan was heard in an audio clip saying, “What am I to do? These individuals spread the news without seeking confirmation. They should have confirmed with the Indore district administration at the very least.”
