National People’s Party leader Conrad Sangma has been sworn in as the chief minister of Meghalaya for the second consecutive term in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries. Sangma will lead a coalition government backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and two regional parties – the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF).
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma takes oath for second term
Conrad Sangma, the leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), has taken oath as the chief minister of Meghalaya for the second time. The ceremony was held at the Raj Bhavan in Shillong in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda, and other dignitaries. Governor Phagu Chauhan administered the oath of office to Sangma, who will be the 13th chief minister of Meghalaya.
Coalition government backed by BJP and regional parties
Sangma will lead a coalition government in Meghalaya, backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and two regional parties – the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF). The coalition secured a majority of seats in the Meghalaya elections, winning a total of 45 out of 60 seats. The UDP won 11 seats, while the PDF won one seat. The NPP won 26 seats and will take eight cabinet berths, while the BJP will get a single berth, UDP will get two berths, and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) will get one berth.
Support from regional parties
The coalition led by Conrad Sangma received support from two major regional parties in Meghalaya – the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF). The UDP won 11 seats, while the PDF won one seat. This increased the number of MLAs supporting the coalition to 45, giving them a comfortable majority to form the government for a second consecutive term.
Sangma’s victory in South Tura constituency
Conrad Sangma won the South Tura constituency with a margin of 5,016 against BJP’s Bernard N Marak. The NPP leader was also elected from the North Tura constituency. The UDP won most of its seats from the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region, while the PDF won its seat from the Dadenggre constituency.
