On the other hand, Jagadish Shettar, a former Karnataka chief minister and Lingayat leader who left the BJP and joined the Congress before the assembly elections, has lost the VIP seat of Hubli-Darwad Central by over 30,000 votes against BJP’s Mahesh Tenginkai. Prominent BJP leader and four-time MLA from the Chikkamaguluru assembly constituency, C T Ravi, has also been trailing since counting began.
Karnataka Election 2023: Major Upsets
The Congress has emerged as the clear winner in the Karnataka Assembly elections of 2023. This victory has come as a major upset for the BJP, which was expected to give a tough competition to the Congress. However, the BJP has secured only 50 seats and is leading on 14, compared to Congress’s 114 seats and 22 leads. Several incumbent ministers of the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government and the Assembly Speaker have lost the election.
Jagadish Shettar (Congress)
Jagadish Shettar, a veteran leader who had left the BJP and joined the Congress before the assembly elections, has suffered a major defeat from the VIP seat of Hubli-Darwad Central by over 30,000 votes against BJP’s Mahesh Tenginkai. A six-time MLA, Shettar joined the Congress last month after he was denied a ticket by the BJP to contest from Hubli-Dharwad Central. Shettar has alleged “ill-treatment” by the BJP before quitting the party.
C T Ravi (BJP)
Prominent BJP leader and four-time MLA from the Chikkamaguluru assembly constituency, C T Ravi, has also been trailing since counting began. In 2018, Ravi had won the Chikmagalur Assembly Election by defeating Congress’s Shankar BL with a margin of 26,314 votes. Since then, Ravi has been winning from the constituency. However, in the current elections, he is trailing behind Janata Dal Secular’s Thimmashetty and Congress’s HD Thammaiah.
Other BJP Ministers to Be Defeated
Apart from Shettar and Ravi, several other BJP leaders and ministers have lost the election. These include B Sriramulu, K Sudhakar, J C Madhuswamy, Govind Karjol, M T B Nagaraj, and K C Narayana Gowda. The Assembly Speaker, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, has also lost to Bhimanna Naik of Congress from the Sirsi constituency.
