According to Bloomberg, the popular holiday rental and hospitality company Airbnb fired 30% of its recruiters this week. According to the report, the layoffs affected 400 out of a total of 6,800 employees. The layoffs were announced despite the fact that the company reported its first profitable year in 2022, with a net income of $1.9 billion.
In addition to new hires, the company has announced layoffs. “We’ve become a leaner and more focused company over the last three years,” an Airbnb representative said in a statement. This year, we anticipate an increase in headcount at the firm.
During the pandemic, approximately 1,900 Airbnb employees, or 25% of the company, were laid off.
According to Livemint, CFO Dave Stephenson stated on the company’s most recent earnings call that the firm still has hiring opportunities and that he expects headcount growth of 2-4% this year versus 11% growth in 2022.
Airbnb reported a 24% increase in revenue for the quarter ending December 31st. Quarterly net income increased from $55 million to $319 million compared to the same period last year.
According to the report, Airbnb stated in an open letter to shareholders that demand has remained high at the start of 2023. The company has stated that it plans to “continue hiring at a prudent pace in 2023.”
Waymo, an Alphabet Inc. subsidiary that develops autonomous driving technology, laid off 137 employees on Friday, according to Mint. In addition to Rivian Automotive Inc, General Motors Co, Twitter Inc, and Meta Platforms Inc, the automotive industry as a whole, including Waymo, has experienced layoffs.
In order to “focus on commercial success,” Waymo has eliminated some engineering positions as part of the layoffs. So far in 2018, Waymo has laid off 209 employees.
In early January, nearly 5% of Microsoft’s workforce was laid off. Amazon is also taking part in the job cuts, which will affect 18,000 people. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has also announced the elimination of 11,000 jobs globally.
