Amravati, Maharashtra – April 16, 2025 – The long-awaited Amravati Airport, officially named Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Airport, has commenced commercial operations, bringing Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region into the aviation map with direct flights to Mumbai. The inauguration ceremony was marked by the departure of Alliance Air’s maiden flight to Mumbai at 11:30 AM, completing the journey in under two hours.
This development is being hailed as a transformative step for the region’s economic and connectivity landscape.
Developed by MADC, Operated Under UDAN Scheme
Located in Belora, approximately 15 km south of Amravati city, the airport has been developed by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). The terminal and 1,850-meter-long runway are equipped with modern infrastructure to handle regional flights under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme.
The airport’s commissioning aligns with the Centre’s vision to connect India’s tier-2 and tier-3 cities by air, making travel affordable and efficient for citizens.
“This airport will become the nucleus of Vidarbha’s development,” said Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, who was present at the inaugural ceremony along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Flight Schedule and Services
Alliance Air, the government’s regional air carrier, will operate thrice-weekly flights between Amravati and Mumbai on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Flight Timings:
- Mumbai to Amravati: Departure at 2:30 PM, arrival at 4:20 PM
- Amravati to Mumbai: Departure at 4:50 PM, arrival at 6:35 PM
These services aim to boost business travel, tourism, and administrative mobility in the region.
Future Plans: Pilot Academy and Textile Park Nearby
Adding to the airport’s potential, authorities have announced that India’s largest pilot training academy, operated by Air India, will soon be established adjacent to the airport premises. The training center will include 34 aircraft, offering professional aviation education on a global scale.
In another major development, a PM MITRA Mega Textile Park spanning 1,000 acres is being planned near the airport. The project is expected to:
- Attract major global investments
- Generate thousands of local jobs
- Support India’s textile export ambition
Economic and Strategic Importance for Vidarbha
Amravati, part of Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, has long awaited direct air connectivity. The new airport not only facilitates quick access to financial capital Mumbai, but also:
- Eases travel for medical patients, students, and professionals
- Supports defence logistics, given its proximity to Nagpur
- Enhances regional trade and infrastructure growth
“We envision Amravati not just as a city with an airport, but as a hub for education, industry, and global connection,” said CM Devendra Fadnavis.
