Electronic Arts has submitted a patent for a type of combat pass that allows you to choose your unlocks rather than to travel a linear path. On 13 May the patent was filed under the name “Seasonal Reward Distribution System.” It’s Battle Pass.
The main difference between this and the battlefield is probably that it offers a “non-linear” path, allowing players to earn what they want, rather than lock it into the linear path.
“The seasonal reward can provide a non-linear map for participants choose how to to progress through the incentive map in the video game, by updating or even levelling a fictitious game or user account,” the patent says. “The virtual map can visibly illustrate the non-linear trail or tracks a customer can take, guess it depends on how the customer wants to proceed and what kinds of accolades the user people prefer to unlock.”
Basically, rather than following a certain path, you would follow a branch, which works more like an ability tree. It sounds like a cool system, but it’s a bit alarming. The Patent mentions “stop gameplays for each consumer except the first customer unless the status of the game is advantageous to stop gameplays for first customer.
Battle Pass From EA
” This suggests that EA wants to pause the game for all when a player rises to a level that could cause obvious problems.
As with a Patent, it seems like a possibility that EA will actually implement this system, but as the publisher is owned by FIFA, Apex Legends, and Battlefield.
