BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has demanded a thorough investigation into the unusually high number of nominations filed by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) within a very short period of time on June 14. The nominations are in relation to the upcoming state panchayat polls scheduled for July 8. Adhikari expressed concerns over the nomination numbers filed by TMC and accused the party’s candidate from the North 24 Parganas district, Shahjahan Sheikh, of concealing financial information in his affidavit.
Allegations of Abnormal Nomination Numbers

Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, has raised questions about the nomination figures submitted by the Trinamool Congress. He specifically highlighted the remarkable volume of nominations filed on June 14 by TMC, emphasizing that over 40,000 nominations require urgent investigation. Adhikari also revealed that an additional 36,000 nominations were filed by TMC on June 15.
Demands for Investigation and Transparency
Taking to Twitter, Adhikari called for a comprehensive investigation into the nomination process. He urged authorities to conduct the investigation strictly within the specified time period from 11 AM to 3 PM and ensure that TMC candidates do not bypass the nomination centers. Adhikari further accused Shahjahan Sheikh, a prominent TMC candidate, of hiding financial facts in his nomination affidavit.
Accusations Against Shahjahan Sheikh

Adhikari pointed out various alleged discrepancies in Sheikh’s financial information. While Sheikh claimed an annual income of only INR 19.83 lakh, Adhikari highlighted that he owns multiple fish farms, a fish processing plant, brick kilns, and a shopping complex in Sarberia More. Adhikari also mentioned Sheikh’s ownership of several buildings, extensive land holdings, and the recent construction of a new house in Park Circus, Kolkata. Adhikari claimed that the valuation of Sheikh’s assets, as mentioned in his nomination papers, amounts to multiple crores, but the value of his land and building is stated to be only around 5 crores.
Alleged Involvement in Post-Poll Violence
Adhikari further alleged that Sheikh orchestrated attacks on BJP workers in the aftermath of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He claimed that after a significant number of voters in many Gram Panchayat areas supported BJP, violence erupted in the Basirhat Sub Division. Adhikari cited the killings of BJP leaders and workers such as Pradip Mondal and Sukanta Mondal in Sandeshkhali of the North 24 Parganas district during that time. Adhikari suggested that Sheikh evaded legal consequences due to his alleged high-level protection.
