Chromebooks with 12 million units and 39.7 million units led to PC recovery at Q1 2021, with growth of 274.6% and 51.8% respectively.
HP Inc. again dominated the market, with growth of 633.7 per cent pushing it beyond the four million unit mark.
With 3,1 million units shipped, Lenovo took second place and increased production to facilitate order backlogs from 2020. According to the latest data from market research firm Canalys, all Acer, Samsung and Dell comprised the other top five, shipping more than 1 million units.
In the fourth consecutive quarter of 2021, worldwide PC markets (including tablets) increased sharply, with shipments rising 53.1 percent (year-on-year) at 122.1 million units.
Chromebooks are now truly a mainstream computer.
While the education sector still accounts for the majority of shipments, its popularity with consumers and traditional business customers has grown further over the past year, “Canalys Research Analyst, Brian Lynch said.
Google is now in a strong position to work with its OEM partners and the cement channel for Chromebooks, added Lynch.
Almost all the leading suppliers continued to grow in shipments in the tablet segment in Q1 2021.
As the most recent iteration of the iPad Air has gained traction to consumers, Apple expanded its lead, growing 50.3 percent and shipping 152 million units.
Samsung held second place with 8 million units shipped, posting 59.9% growth. With 133.5% and 197.9% (year on year), Lenovo and Amazon achieved the highest levels of shipment volume growth, respectively.
However, Huawei suffered a 27.9 per cent decline primarily as a result of its former Honor brand being divided into a separate entity.
“The tablet market continues to challenge expectations with its strong return,” said Himani Mukka, a research analyst.
“At a time when the overall PC market is faced with a supply crunch, suppliers with high tablets have achieved even greater benefits due to the increased demand for screen access and distant productivity caused by the pandemic,” added Mukka.
Lenovo remained a leader in the overall computer market, including desktops, notebooks and tablets, shipping 24 million units.
