The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a bulletin stating that the very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy is likely to make landfall in Saurashtra, Kutch, and adjoining Pakistan coasts by tonight. The IMD also mentioned that the process of landfall will begin in the evening and continue until midnight. The current location of the cyclone is in the northeast Arabian Sea near latitude 22.8°N and longitude 67.35°E.
Location and Expected Wind Speeds
According to the IMD bulletin, the cyclone is currently situated 135 km west-southwest of Jakhau Port in Gujarat, 190 km west-northwest of Devbhumi Dwarka, 170 km west-southwest of Naliya, 280 km west-northwest of Porbandar, and 230 km south of Karachi, Pakistan. During the landfall, the windspeed is anticipated to range between 115 kmph and 125 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 140 kmph.
Evacuation Efforts and Preparations
The Gujarat administration has undertaken extensive evacuation measures, relocating over 94,000 individuals from eight coastal districts to temporary shelters. Among those evacuated, approximately 46,800 people were from Kutch district, followed by 10,749 from Devbhumi Dwarka, 9,942 from Jamnagar, 9,243 from Morbi, 6,822 from Rajkot, 4,864 from Junagadh, 4,379 from Porbandar, and 1,605 from Gir Somnath district. The evacuated population includes 8,900 children, 1,131 pregnant women, and 4,697 elderly individuals. The Gujarat government has established a total of 1,521 shelter homes in these eight districts, and medical teams are regularly visiting the shelters.
Government Response and Review
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the State Emergency Operations Centre in Gandhinagar in the morning and held a meeting with top officials to assess the situation and review the relief measures being provided to the affected people.
