The 2023 Asia Cup, which was scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan, has become a point of contention between the Indian cricket board (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The BCCI has refused to travel to Pakistan for the tournament, leading to the PCB warning that Pakistan might pull out of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India if India does not participate in the Asia Cup. The final decision on the matter will be taken in March during the Executive Board meetings of the ICC and ACC.
Hosting Rights
Pakistan was granted the hosting rights of the 2023 Asia Cup, but the BCCI has refused to travel to Pakistan for the tournament, leading to calls for the tournament to be hosted in a neutral venue.
BCCI’s Refusal to Travel
The BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, has categorically denied India’s chances of playing cricket in Pakistan, leading to the PCB warning that Pakistan might pull out of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India if India does not participate in the Asia Cup.
Meeting in Bahrain
Najam Sethi, the current chairman of the PCB, and Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, met during the ACC meeting in Bahrain to discuss the issue. However, Shah continued to maintain his stance that India won’t be travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup.
Potential Host
There have been reports that the Asia Cup could be hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), although an official confirmation is awaited.
Final Decision
The final decision on the matter will be taken in March during the Executive Board meetings of the ICC and ACC. Sethi warned Shah that if BCCI remains firm on its decision, then Pakistan might also pull out of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
