A man in Spain was shocked to find six containers filled with a stash of notes worth £47,000 ($63,000) while renovating his house, only to later find out the banknotes were outdated and could not be accepted. Despite this disappointment, he was able to cash in some updated notes from the collection, worth £30,000 ($40,000).
Hidden Stash Found During Renovation
Toño Piñeiro, from the province of Lugo in Spain, found the containers filled with banknotes while renovating his newly acquired house, which had been abandoned for four decades. The notes were well-preserved and ironed, but the last ones were somewhat damaged due to humidity.
Bank Notes Outdated, Only Partially Accepted
Excited about his discovery, Piñeiro went to the bank to cash in the currency only to find out that the notes were outdated and could not be accepted. The Bank of Spain had discontinued the old notes around twenty years prior, in 2002. Despite this setback, Piñeiro was able to cash in some updated notes from the collection, which paid for a new roof on his house.
Souvenirs to Keep
Piñeiro plans to keep some of the cash from the haul as a souvenir, as a reminder of his incredible find.
UK Man Finds Gold Pendant with Metal Detector
In another recent discovery, a man in the UK used a metal detector to uncover a gold pendant featuring symbols of Tudor King Henry VIII and his first wife Katherine of Aragon. The pendant was attached to a chain of 75 links and an enameled suspension link in the form of a hand.
Both Piñeiro and the UK man were amazed by their discoveries, reminding us of the exciting possibilities that can come from renovating an old property or using a metal detector.
